Video: "At the Old Vic Tunnels" (w/ Edward Sharpe)

Last year to kick off their tour, folkie-rock band Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros played 5-nights at the Old Vic Tunnels in London.  They filled those 5 nights with as explosive a visual and auditory treat as they could with performance art, psychedelic light shows and film screenings (Holy Mountain, Renegade, etc..), experimental dance and of course music.  It was pitched as a "360 degrees experience" with this happening in different rooms and on every turn.  A wild, wild West in the middle of London.  Looked cool to me.  As expected all 5-nights sold out.

The folks at the Old Vic Tunnels created a short 10-min documentary capturing the behind-the-scenes of this event.

Video: “The Detroit Beautification Project”

The Motor City is becoming a Mecca for art these days, especially street art. With the city being struck especially hard during the economic downturn Detroit now has half the residents  in boasted in 1950. Forty square miles that were once bustling with people and business’ are now vacant, to put it into perspective that’s the size of San Francisco. The Detroit Beautification Project aims to fill those abandoned areas with color and character and this Bankshot directed video shares some of the art, experiences and people involved in it all. With words of wisdom and art from Revok, Pose, Wane, Ces, Risk, Askew, Triston Eaton and many more you’ll get an inside peak into the in’s and out’s of this large scale venture which seems to divide the local community as art often does.

Video: Aesop Rock - "ZZZ Top"

Aesop Rock will be releasing his latest LP, Skelethon, in only a couple of weeks and he’s getting the word out there with the second set of visuals from the project. In  the Pete Lee directed "ZZZ Top" we get an action-packed Kung Fu extravaganza staring martial arts master Patti Li, this one is a lot of fun.

Show Opening: Shawn Barber - "Memoir: Tattooed Portrait Series" @ Joshua Liner Gallery, NYC

Shawn Barber opened his latest solo show last night at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC entitled "Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series,” an exhibition of 25 new paintings by the Los Angeles-based artist. The exhibition was presented in conjunction with the limited edition hardcover release of Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series book. This is the third volume in Barber’s ongoing series documenting the world and artistry of contemporary tattoo.

Making appearences are portraits of some of the tattoo world’s heaviest hitters with the likes of Grime, Don Ed Hardy, Hannah Atichison and Shige to name but a few. The Shige piece is truly stunning in person taking up three large panels and measuring in at 6-x-9-feet,  Barber’s Portrait of the Japanese artist(2010–12) is a panorama with nine full-length views of the tattooist, rendered in the nude to reveal the majesty of his own bodily canvas.  It’s worth noting that the work is Barber’s largest piece to date.

On the other end of the gallery a large canvas showcasing  James Spencer Briggs at Work on Aaron Wahlman (2011–12) offers its audience a window into the processes, and protocols of a tattoo parlor with its masterful rendering of the tattooists intricate paraphernalia and the clients intense and personal experience.

Shawn Barber - "James Spencer Briggs at WorkOil on Canvas 2012 48 x 60 in.

The galleries second room offers a wall lined up with a series of small still life’s that isolate the distinctive hardware of specific tattoo artists, such as Daily Driver, Micky Sharpz Liner Machine and Single Needle Shader (2012), these pieces are a window into the personalized and distinctive tools used by the masters that are rarely seen in public. Hanging in the center of the same room is Abstracted Self Portrait (2010–12) which pairs multiple views of Shawn’s arms and other limbs in motion as free-floating examples of contemporary ink, it’s worth noting that the piece showcase’s a brighter pallet from Shawn than I am used to seeing.

Shawn Barber - "Abstracted Self Portrait" Oil on Canvas 2012 36 x 68 in.

Other works include an intimate moment captured in time between tattooist  Jason Kundell and his daughter Lula, a head study of fellow painter and tattooist Henry Lewis and both a macro and mico take on Freddy Corbin’s “temple.”

Shawn’s latest, beautifully put together book was also up for grabs, it displays the current exhibition in full and pretty much every other major work from the artist since his last publication was released.  A loving forward by actress/comedian Margaret Cho and and NeedlesandSins.com blogger, Marisa Kakoulas, who provides the volume’s introduction, serve as a great opening to this limited, signed and numbered (edition of 100,) hardcover coffee table book.

Shawn Barber - "Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits SeriesHardcover Book, 2012.

Those who attended the opening were treated to a very friendly and open Barber who was only too happy to pose for pictures and discuss the work with his many fans… and with the theme of the works being tattoos you know the crowed themselves were walking canvas all worth admiring in their own right!

Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series will be on display till July 28th, make sure you brave the summer heat and make it down to the gallery in the next month for some truly inspirational work.

Video: Doug Aitken's Song 1 Project

Pitchfork recently released a behind-the-scenes video on the large art installation they helped produce with artist Doug Aitken.  The project was entitled Song1 and took place at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC last April.  With the help of 11 high-def projectors a video was broadcast on the exterior of the building featuring multiples versions of the 1934 classic "I Only Have Eyes for You" by The Flamingos reworked and re-imagined by musicians such as Beck, Lucky Dragons, Devendra Banhart, James Murphy, No Age, etc..

Aitken chose this song because he associates it w/ "sonic wallpaper", something we have heard so many times on radio, TV, etc.. that it has lost its meaning and essentially fades from our consciousness.  In this project the song is warped and poked at from every angle hoping to create something new.

On May 11th, the Hirschhorn had what they call "a happening" which was a live concert in conjunction with Song 1 in which many of the musicians in question including Animal Collective's Geologist created live soundtracks outside on the lawn of the musuem to accompany the video display.  The was also broadcast live on Youtube.

BONUS - The original Song1 promotional video

Video: Modeselektor - "Shipwreck" (feat. Thom Yorke)

Electronic wizards Modeselektor are known for putting together some pretty good collaborations on their last couple albums. With last years release Monkeytown, they teamed up with Radiohead's Thom Yorke on 2 track, "Shipwreck" & "This". The video for "Shipwreck" was directed by Tony T. Datis and features zombies, a boy with powers and mean dogs... the usual.

The song is very Thom Yorke-ish and the video feels like one the 28 Days movies. I was going to post the video for "This" but I couldn't even finish watching it as it was pretty cheesy... watch it on your own here.

Modeselektor is currently touring and will be releasing a new LP, Modeselektion Vol.2 next week.

Video: Sigur Rós - "Fjögur píanó" (NSFW)

Icelandic band Sigur Ros created a project they call The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment in which they gave 10 filmmakers the same modest budget and asked them to come up with whatever they wanted. Films are released on their website every 2 weeks and so far 3 have been completed.

"We never meant our music to come with a pre-programmed emotional response.  We don’t want to tell anyone how to feel and what to take from it.  With the films, we have literally no idea what the directors are going to come back with. none of them know what the others are doing, so hopefully it could be interesting."

The latest video that came out last week was directed by Alma Har'el, entitled "Fjögur píanó" and features Shia Labeouf's penis... eh, I mean ... Shia Labeouf.  It is actually an interesting video but the penis is what seems to have caught everyones attention.  The video is emo and modern dance-ish but shot very well. Its hard to fault a video for being over the top emotional when the band and music in question is so successful at evoking emotion.  I look forward to the rest of the releases.... with penises or no.

Check out their website to see the previous 2 films and to learn more about the project.

Video: DIIV - "How Long Have You Known?"

Brooklyn shoe gazers DIIV, originaly named Dive, released their debut album Oshin yesterday to rave reviews. The album is a short sweet pop gem for those into the guitar sound of 80’s mainstays such as The Cure or The Smiths. "How Long Have You Known?" is one of the many quality tunes from the release so I figured I’d throw up the Grant Singer directed video to act as an introduction for those unfamiliar…

BONUS: Here is a full LP Stream of Oshin if you like what you heard above.

Listen: Joanna Newsome - "The Diver's Wife"

On Monday night, Joanna Newsom, performed with Philip Glass at San Francisco's Warfield Theater as part of a benefit for Big Sur's Henry Miller Memorial Library. The audience was treated to a new song from the captivating Newsom by the name of  "The Diver's Wife." Check out the quality recording of the performance below….

Video: Lana Del Rey – “National Anthem”

Lana Del Rey dropped her latest video only a day after sharing an extended preview with the world. Directed by Anthony Mandler "National Anthem” sees Del Rey playing both Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O with A$APRocky making  a guest appearance as JFK. The video is shot to look like a series of vintage home video-style clips, something Lana seems to be drawn to.

Video: I'm Now - Mudhoney documentary

Yeahhhh,.... finally a documentary about a band I actually care about.  I've had my eye on this one since the teasers started coming out last year.  The film in question is the documentary entitled "I'm Now" about Seattle grunge-scene pioneers Mudhoney.  I listened to this band a shit ton in high school and continue to, as they are still touring.

I haven't seen it so I can't endorse it yet but am happy to just help get the word out.  The film was directed by Ryan Short & Adam Pease and premiered a couple weeks ago.  The website has screening dates and locations and hopefully it will be coming out on DVD in the Fall.  Anyone sees it lets us know how it is...

Listen: Old Man Gloom – “NO” Full Lp Stream

Old Man Gloom just released their fifth album, their first in eight years, entitled NO this week. For the uninitiated OMG is a supergroup containing members from Converge, ISIS, Cave In, Zozobra, Doomriders, Mamiffer, etc… But unlike most supergroups this one releases some exceptional music and you can stream the whole thing below right now….

"NO" was made using acoustic and electric instruments including but not limited to:
sheet metal, toilets, human voices, guitars, drums, tambourines, shoes, hands, various
other percussive tools, analog and digital electronic devices, and brains.”

Video: Death Grips: "Double Helix"

Following my prediction a month back that Sacramento’s experimental hip hop group DeathGrips  are on pace to create a video for every song on the first of their two 2011 LP releases, The Money Store, we have the next chapter in the visual saga. Keeping things experimental, the self-directed video for "Double Helix" was filmed entirely from the inside of a Toyota Prius, using the rearview camera.

Video: Sébastien Tellier - "Russian Attractions"

Sébastien Tellier is back with another fantastic video from his recently releases LP, My God Is Blue.  The kaleidoscope visuals were produced by Vice with the help of Air and directed by Meredith Danluck.

“We took the idea of falling in love with a stranger, and considered the fact that love itself is a stranger. There's a reason we use the word "fall" when referring to love. Because when its pull becomes too strong to resist, you lose your balance and what happens next is an unknown beyond our control. Although scary, the unknown is also undeniable attractive.”

Listen: The Antlers – “Drift Drive” & “Crest”

Onomatopoeia favorites, The Antlers, are gearing up to release a 4 song ep on July 24th entitled Undersea.  The band have offered a listen via theirsoundcloud of opening track “Drift Drive” and as a bonus you can listen to track 3, “Crest,” via NPR as of  early this morning. Full tracklist below….

1. Drift Dive
2. Endless Ladder
3. Crest
4. Zelda

Video: Punks Jump Up (featuring Chromeo's Dave 1) - "Mr Overtime"

Nice little short animation for London Electronic-duo Punks Jump Up's new single "Mr. Overtime" featuring Dave 1 from Chromeo.  The video is produced by production house  ChezEddy and directed by French animator Maxime Bruneel who is known for his stylistic tripped-out videos.

It definitely has that French Ed Banger Records style that the movie Drive emphasized and reminds me of an version of the Queens of the Stone Age video "Go With the Flow". Euro-electronic To read a bit more on the making of the video, check out ChezEddy's blog.

Video: SpaceGhostPurrp - "Osiris of the East"

Having just released his debut commercial release, Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp, South Florida producer and MC SpaceGhstPurrp also marked the occasion with the drop of a video for his tune “Osiris Of The East.” The clip was directed by Tim Saccenti and features the Ghost doing his thing on a hazy and colorful backdrop. I’ve been listening to the LP quite a bit in the last month or so, falling in love with little moments throughout the dark and sparse journey that the MC creates around his rhymes. Not for everyone but if you like what you hear below you will like the record.

Video: Beirut – “The Rip Tide”

Beirut dropped a video for "The Rip Tide", the title track from their 2011 album. The visually captivating clip was directed by Houmam Abdallah. Frontman Zach Condon shared his thought's on the video below....

"I always felt that "The Rip Tide" wasn't fully able to project its own ambitions in song form.. no matter how it was performed or recorded, it felt contained by sound alone... I wanted more, as I often do with my music, and this is not a bad thing. Growing to accept a song's limits is part of the process of creating and loving them. Which was why I was so excited to see what Houmam had dug into when he picked "The Rip Tide" out of all others for a video. The concept fit, and the product brought the song somewhere that I had only been able to describe to myself, now available for others to see and feel it much more as I had in the process of writing it."

Listen: M.I.A. ft. Missy Elliott & Rye Rye – “Bad Girls" (Switch Remix)

With “Bad Girls” we saw a return to form from M.I.A. and sticking with the winning formula of the past she has enlisted Switch (one half of Major Lazer) to provide a remix. With guest verses from Missy Elliott(welcome back) and young Baltimore upstart Rye Rye this one is a winner. An EP entitled Bad Girls – The Remixes, featuring appearances from Missy E, Rye Rye and Azealia Banks over reworks from Switch, Danja and Leo Justi will be released July 6th digitally, or if you’re feel like dropping a little coin you can pick up this exclusive USB key necklace.

Video: Yeasayer - "Longevity"

Watch another extremely vibrant video for what appears to be the second leaked track from Yeasayer’s forthcoming LP, Fragrant World, out August 21st, through Secretly Canadian. “Longevity” is on the dreamier side of the bands repertoire but still fits nicely into the universe they have carved for themselves.

Video: Conor Harrington – “Fame Festival 2012”

Here is a fun, short, video of Irishman Conor Harrington doing some painting and a whole lot of eating at this year’s Fame Festival in Italy.

Listen: Evian Christ – “Mix for Mary Anne Hobbs”

UK producer Joshua Leary, aka Evian Christ shared  new mix /set he did for Mary Anne HobbsXfm show. The 20-minute mix stays true to Evian’s own sound featuring pitched and mangled  hip hop samples re contextualized into new works.  Featuring tracks from the likes of  Lofty305, Kiki Hitomi, Ice Edwards and Evian Christ himself.

Listen: Purity Ring – “Fineshrine”

Purity Ring have unleashed another tune from their forthcoming LP, Shrines, in the form of “Fineshrine.” Corin and Megan stick with the formula here in regards to  what we have heard thus far. At this point it’s a safe bet to say that if you like any of the aforementioned songs you are going to enjoy the album as a whole. Stream the Youtube video below….

The VSS Reunite

Finally a reunion I can get excited about! Boulder’s VSS have announced their intention to play a batch of reunion shows in celebration of the release of Nervous Circuits on vinyl and a forthcoming compilation LP that collects their previous 7" material (21:51). "The VSS began in Colorado in January of 1995 before calling it quits in July of 1997. In that time the band relocated to San Francisco, toured the U.S. and Europe/UK, released a series of 7-inch EPs and issued Nervous Circuits, the only proper full length album from the band. The VSS are the pioneers in the underground punk genre having introduced sci-fi keyboards, angular guitars, unusual rhythmic shifts and vocal effects that come together for the bands distinctive sound.  I personally love this band and have praised them in the past, so far no word on dates, cities, etc.

Members of The VSS went on to join bands like The Slaves, Pleasure Forever, Red Sparowes, Rabbits, Year Future and more. They are better than 99% of the punk/hardcore acts that ever existed, past or present, and forgo easy traps like medley and chorus'.

The Mars Volta released a video for the 15 minute “Malakin Jewel” off of their latest LP, Noctourniquet, this morning. Keeping things elegantly simple the black and white video focuses on the band performing live and can be viewed below...

Video: Summer Camp – “Always”

Back in May we shared something new from retro pop act SummerCamp in the form of “Life” and title track “Always” off of the soon to be released Always EP.  Today we bring you the visuals for the title track, a dark tale of a kidnapping gone wrong, heavy stuff for such a light affair in this slice of synth-pop goodness.

Listen/Download: El-P, Killer Mike, Mr. Muthaf*ckin’ Exquire & Despot – “Into The Wild” Mixtape

El-P and Killer Mike are hitting road with some of their friends for the “Into The Wild Tour” and in commemoration Karma Loop and TrackstarDJ put together the official Into The Wild mixtape to keep all the fans in check. Video: Azealia Banks - "Liquorice"

Azealia Banks has been very busy... Today the young emcee is back with a new video in the form of the Lone-produced "Liquorice" from her recently released 1991 EP.  Azelia was styled by Nicola Formichetti and the western themed clip was directed by Rankin.

Download: David Byrne & St. Vincent – “Who”

David Byrne and St. Vincent will be releasing a full collaborative album which the pair has been working on since 2009. The two artists were originally approached by HousingWorks with the aim of performing a concert for charity, but it was eventually decided after a bond was formed between the artists that a full LP would be even better. Love This Giant, is the result and it will be released by 4AD on September 11th .  “Who” is our first taste of the record, and it’s a pretty great affair with lots of funky horns and yelps. Annie  and David had this to say of the project....

“It’s an honest-to-god, straight-down-the-middle thing. He wrote music, I wrote music; he wrote words, I wrote words. He sings half the songs, I wrote half the songs. I’ve never been that closely entwined in the songwriting, arranging, singing, and lyric-writing process with anyone.”
AC

“Annie suggested we use a brass band rather than the typical rock ensemble—which would brilliantly solve the sound problems inherent in performing in a small joint like Housing Works. A brass band wouldn’t need mixing and could be heard acoustically in a room that size. They’d balance themselves. Easy. We’d only need vocal mics."

"A lot of people, hearing a description of this project, assumed that it might be an artsy indulgence, but somehow it didn’t turn out that way. It’s a pop record—well, in my book anyway. I started to sense that we were ending up with a sound and approach I’d never heard before. There were elements that were reminiscent of things I’d heard, but a lot of it was completely new. Very exciting!”
DB

Video: Yeasayer – “Henrietta”

In the words of Yeasayer, here’s a “vignette to take drugs to, created by Yoshi Sodeoka.” The soundtrack is Henrietta, the lead single off the band’s third LP, Fragrant World, due out August 21st via Secretly Canadian.

Video: Passion Pit – “Take A Walk”

PassionPit‘s forthcoming sophomore album Gossamer  is scheduled to drop on July 24th via Columbia and so far we have had the chance to hear two tracks from it including “I’ll be Alright” and “Take A Walk.”  The later now has a video to go along with it presented by the Creators Project. The video seems to take the POV of a ball flying through the scenic airs of the East coast here in the United  States, enjoy it below…

Video: New Teaser for Descendents/ALL documentary, “Filmage’”

Before Blink, before Fall out Boy and before the bastardization of pop punk into what I now refer to as mall punk there was the Descendents and All, the original pop punk band(s) with up tempo songs about nerd heartbreak. It’s truly crazy how many bands starting in the mid 90’s totally hijacked the sound these guys created but never with even a fraction of the humor and intensity that the Descendents and their sister band did. Filmage, the long-in-the-works documentary about Descendents and ALL, has a new preview up on the internet alongside some news that the filmmakers are planning to work the festival circuit with the movie, as well as holding public screenings in cities around the US this year, though the only specific city mentioned so far is Fort Collins, CO. You can read the full update on the film's website, here and watch the preview below…

Video: Aaron "Jaws" Homoki X Games Real Street 2012

We have been sharing video’s of some of the most technical skaters out there so why not share some  clips of the most “big” skaters out there. Arizona skater Aaron "Jaws" Homoki fits the bill perfectly as he goes big in this 2012 video, reeaalllly big. Video was shot and edited by Buster O’Shea with music from Fool Moon.

Listen: Azealia Banks – "Aquababe" (prod. by Machinedrum)

Hot off the heels of the recently released 1991 ep here is the brand new, second single off of Azealia Banks’ upcoming mixtape Fantasea (due out the 4th of July). Like the title suggests “Aquababe” spins around a mermaid-theme and is produced by Machinedrum.  Like the awesome  “Jumanji” I prefer this newer material to that of the 1991 ep, the Harlem rapper does her thing with lots of playful tongue twisters.

Listen: Joey Bada$$ - “1999” Mixtape

Current golden child and Brooklyn emcee Joey Bada$$ dropped his debut mixtape 1999 today. Featuring the 17 year-old laying down rhymes over a handful of borrowed beats from the likes of DOOM, Dilla and KNXWLEDGE amongst others, 1999 is a solid effort from the emcee that will most certainly find it’s audience with fans of 90’s NY hip hop or more specifically Tribe Called Quest.

Listen: Fang Island – “Sisterly”

About a month back we shared some new music from Brooklyn’s Fang Island in the form of “Asunder.” The tune will be appearing on the bands forthcoming sophomore effort, Major, as will today’s track. “Sisterly” continues down the same path of air guitar warship expected of the band.   Major will be released on July 24th via Sargent House.

Listen: Passion Pit – I’ll Be Alright”

Following up “Take A Walk,” Passion Pit drops the second single from their upcoming sophomore album, Gossamer. “I’ll Be Alright” shares more with the Passion Pit of yesteryear than “Take A Walk” does with it's bombastic and chaotic sound. Gossamer is out July 24.

Video: TED Talks USC – Rodney Mullen –“How Context Shapes Content”

Rodney Mullen is the bomb, no other skater has done as much for street skating as Mullen and his vast bag of original tricks. Notoriously shy and also kind of goofy it is with excitement that we share this TED talk with the skate innovator at USC campus. Rodney discuss’ inventing some of the most fundamental tricks used today as well as (as the title suggests) how context shapes content. Rodney also likens skateboarding to hacking and open source computing communities where individual’s take something and through a deeper understanding of it make improvements and give it a new context.

“What do skateboarding and innovation have in common? More than you might think. A successful entrepreneur and innovator, Rodney Mullen is widely considered the most influential street skater in history, inventing most of the tricks used today. By the time he was 23, Mullen had already set new milestones for skateboarding winning 35 out of 36 freestyle competitions. He studied engineering at the University of Florida before co-founding World Industries, the largest skate company of the 90's, which was acquired for more than $20m. He continues to skate, innovate, and design some 30 years after he won his first world championship at the age of 11. Mullen spends his spare time thinking about open source communities, hacking the urban terrain, and transforming the mundane into something new. He'll be featured in the upcoming documentary, "The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography."

Listen: Doc Delay's - "Galactic Gazebo Music" mix

Well whatta ya' know, do my eyes deceive me? Summer is creeping on and we have a new Doc Delay mix to enjoy, the Galactic Gazebo Music mix. Us Onomatopoeians have a nice little appreciation for the Brooklyn based DJ and have been hyping this new release for months... mainly because it was supposed to come out months ago, but who are we to complain? The 3rd in the Galactic series of mixes took over a year and the amount of work that went into it is quite evident.

"I spent a year meticulously amassing source material and slowly pieced the mix together using pro-tools. Working in key, with full fidelity intact was truly the most important concern in these arrangements. Too many mixes I’ve heard lately, my own included, have a rushed feel and transitions based solely in percussion. I wanted the finished product to sound like each element could not be separated from the family of music to which it was grouped. Every song should benefit from the one before it, after it, and over it. The genre of the songs need not matter–simply their sounds together."

To listen to his previous Galactic mixes check out our previous coverage and be sure to check out Delay's site for more mixes and news on his live DJ gigs. Including releases of individual "loose" & original tracks in the next coming weeks.
